Chemical Peels 101

We all want to look good, feel good, and grow old gracefully. In the tireless search for the proverbial fountain of youth, we often here the term “chemical peel” which effectively target any number of skin conditions. Alpha & Beta Hydroxy acids such as Glycolic, Salicylic, Lactic, and Kojic acids are only but a few of the key ingredients we often hear about. But how do we know which Alpha Hydroxy acids are appropriate for our skin care concerns? When scouring the internet for a Chicago Plastic surgeon and the technician to perform your in-office treatment, it is important to bear in mind a chemical peel should be customized to fit your current skin condition, there is no “one size fits all”. For example, if your evening moisturizer is alcohol based, Lactic acid, albeit hydrating, can reverse the effects of oily skin. Why? Alcohol based skin care is very drying and causes the production of more oil resulting in the potential for an Acne breakout. Lactic acid hydrates thirsty skin by putting back the water element our skin needs to produce healthy cells. The result: hydrated skin cells and productive cell turnover.

As we age, skin loses its luster because our bodies deplete precious biological lipids designed protect our skin from ultraviolet damage. Skin cells which have lost their water, or ‘keratinized” cells, build atop of one another causing skin to darken and “mottle’ giving the skin a rough texture and/or “ashy” appearance. Glycolic acid is a wonderful tool to accelerate cell renewal by gently eliminating the buildup of dead cells. In turn, skin is balanced, hydrated, and possesses a more youthful appearance.

When consulting clients about the nature of chemical peels, most often ask “will I be red and irritated after”? The answer is, the skin should not be irritated, however, “redness” is the mechanism to deliver increased blood flow to nourish skin tissues. Post chemical peel redness shouldn’t last more than 10 – 20 minutes, anything longer and the peel was definitely not suited for your skin.
No matter your goals for healthy and youthful skin, it is imperative to discuss an appropriate home care regimen and appropriate sun block with a qualified technician.

Try them On for Size: Choosing Your Breast Implant Size

Choosing the correct implant size for your breast augmentation is an important decision and not one that all women get right the first time around. In fact, changing the size of an implant is one of the most common reasons that women have additional breast surgery. Because of this, JW Plastic Surgery pays special attention to implant size education. We find that this reduces the desire and need for repeat surgery. The following can help you get your implant size right the first time:

1. Don't Go Strictly By Cup Size
There is no standard B, C, or D cup. Each bra is different. Also, breast size is largely influenced by overall body proportion. A conservative C might look very large on a small framed woman but on another women it might look too small.

2. Talk to Your Chicago Plastic Surgeon about Your Expectations
Only you know exactly what you would like to achieve. Talk in depth with your Chicago Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Weinzweig, about your expectations. It's your body and your choice. Your surgeon will know what will look proportionate and appropriate on your frame. Only you know what makes you feel comfortable. The dialogue with your plastic surgeon should continue until you feel that you are 100% on the same page.

3. Know your Body's Limitations
There are limits to what size implants you can have and still appear natural and proportionate. These limits are set by your body. The width of the base of your breast determines the diameter of the breast implant that would be most appropriate for you. Variation of the projection of the implant will determine how far the breast will protrude forward and contribute to lift and perkiness of the breasts. Additionally, any asymmetries that you have before augmentation will be accentuated afterwards. Getting the right size of implants starts with having realistic expectations of the potential results.

4. Consider Opting for Adjustable Breast Implants
Chicago cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig, offers adjustable breast implant for breast augmentations. These implants allow patients to adjust their breast size post-operatively. This option helps reduce the likelihood of breast implant size dissatisfaction. Learn more:

Rhinoplasty King: A Perfect Nose

"Beak, honker, schnoz..".

We have a lot of words for noses that are not "perfect". But, what exactly is a "perfect nose"? Here we turn to Dr. Weinzweig to help us understand what a "perfect nose" looks like:

Ashley: Doctor, what are the characteristics of a "perfect nose"?

Dr. Weinzweig: There is no "perfect nose". However, there is the perfect nose for each face. The perfect nose for a specific face will depends on facial characteristics, bony structure, tissues quality, ethnicity, and personal preference. A good rule of thumb is that your nose should not be overly noticeable- it should fit well and harmoniously with the rest of your face.
